Security – November 2020

Traveling Safely to Mexico.

When sharing my experiences and the beautiful photos of all my trips to Mexico, most people become excited and a huge smile on their faces follows the look I get from most Americans “… but is it safe?”. Although nowadays everyone is more concerned about the pandemic, people in the back of their minds are still worried about how safe the country is- Covid and crime wise. Let me break it down.
When it comes to Covid, The country has no restrictions for entry—however, anyone showing symptoms will be quarantined. Mexico has quickly become one of the top travel destinations during the Covid-19 pandemic. The Covid entry requirements for Mexico do not require any mandatory tests or quarantines upon arrival. This has made it a top choice for many travelers looking for a quick getaway without the worry of being granted entry into the country.
Impressively, Mexico has handle safety during the pandemic pretty well as a whole. Many travelers have mentioned how impressed they were with the safety protocols resorts had implemented to protect travelers. The ‘Safe Travel Stamp‘ by the World Travel and Tourism Council recognizes “governments and companies around the world which have adopted health and hygiene global standardized protocols – so consumers can experience ‘Safe Travels’.” While the ‘Safe Travel Stamp’ does not guarantee to keep visitors safe from contracting COVID-19, it does show that the destinations are working to prevent the spread of the virus. All major tourist destinations in Mexico including Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, and Mazatlan have earned the ‘Safe Travel Stamp’, easing travelers minds
While there is not a countrywide mandate on masks, individual states have implemented strict rules for wearing masks in public. Mexico takes its tourism industry seriously and goes to great lengths to protect it. Social distancing policies are in effect across Mexico especially in tourism areas that are following strict capacity guidelines based on the epidemiology of the area. Now, when it comes to crime, Mexico has improved in all the tourist areas, states including Jalisco, Quintana Roo, and Baja California go out of their way to ensure safety in order to avoid crime affecting tourism. However, there are some states that are still not recommended at this moment. These include Michoacan, Sinaloa, and Guerrero. Here are some safety tips that will help you stay safe. *Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Have pesos preferably. *Try to stay in groups when exploring the cities *Stay within the touristic areas; get a tour if you want to visit non-touristic areas *When using a cab, call a cab service; avoid hailing street cabs *Do not flash jewelry. Expensive bracelets, rings, or watches will just attract attention which will not always be the good kind of attention *Leave all your documents, including passport, at the hotel’s safe.
Above all use common sense. Whether you are traveling in Mexico or in any other country, some areas will not always be the best idea (some locals do not even visit them). Keep in mind that most of the crimes are opportunistic and not necessarily premeditates. Do not become a target through illogical behavior. Simple safety tips like this will ensure a good vacation and a great time in beautiful Mexico! SAFE TRAVELS.

I agree with your comments regarding security and safety in Mexico. We have been travelling there for years and have always felt safe. In general, the people we have encountered in all states are friendly, caring and always go out of their way to make us feel welcomed!
